“Be yourself- not your idea of what you think somebody else’s idea of yourself should be.”
― Henry David Thoreau
Do you feel like your head is full of voices telling you who you need to be?
Who sets the dial on your automatic pilot settings that determine your direction?
Someone does.
If you don’t ask the questions, “Who am I?” and “What do I want?” you will abdicate the role you have been given to set the dials, draw the map, create the agenda.
Accepting this role is to be consciously aware of who you are. And consciously aware of what you want.
Does this mean you will be blatantly selfish and disgustingly insensitive? Hardly. Only as an authentic person do you have the ability to look at another with compassion and acceptance, rather than the need for outward approval. If you allow someone else to create your life you will always wonder how you are performing, looking constantly for signs of acceptance or rejection.
When you are on your authentic path, you look only within, to your higher self, for the direction you should take. When you are on your authentic path, you will have resources to give to others, and an example of a life true to its source.
As we cultivate peace and happiness in ourselves, we also nourish peace and happiness in those we love.
- Thich Nhat Hanh
